Tax season will be here in a flash.
Today we’re going to focus on the task that’s dreaded by me and…well, a lot of you. But it’s an important one. Especially since tax documents should be making their way to your mailbox by the end of the month. (For all of you outside the U.S., don’t check out yet! I’m sure the task for today still applies.) It’s time to organize some of that paper!
Don’t worry. You won’t have to organize it ALL. We’re just going to take a few baby steps today so it’s easier in the coming months. We’re going to focus on taxes.
Preparing for Tax Season
Depending on how much time you have to devote to this task, you can complete as many steps as you have time for today.
1. Create a 2014 Tax Folder.
If you do nothing else, complete this step!! Tiffany from The Nest Effect shows just how simple creating your tax folder can be. It can be a hanging folder, pocket folder, file folder, you name it. You just need a dedicated place to put tax documentation as it comes in over the next few weeks.
2. Create a Tax System for 2015.
It’s the start of a new year so what better time to get your future paper clutter in order. Create a system NOW so it doesn’t keep piling up.
It can be a simple 12 Tab Expanding Folder, a filing cabinet full of hanging folders, or a full fledged professional filing system.
After years of trying to do it myself, I’ll tell you that the Freedom Filer is the only filing system that’s kept me sane in the paper department over the past couple of years. It’s a tad expensive to set up but after a few years of using it, I now think it’s worth every penny!
Just remember, the type of system doesn’t matter as much as having one that works for you and then using it!
