I’m loving the gorgeous, delicious fruit that’s so plentiful right now. It’s healthy. It’s inexpensive. And it’s tasty!
Unfortunately, the fruit doesn’t just taste good to me. It tastes delicious to fruit flies!
If you have those pesky fruit flies hanging our your kitchen like I do, try one or all of these tips to get rid of them.
How to get rid of fruit flies
1. Clean. Clean. Then clean some more.
Okay, this probably isn’t what you wanted to hear first. But, you really do need to clean your kitchen thoroughly. If you have rotten fruit, crumbs, leftovers from the night before hanging around, you’ll just attract more bugs. So do your best to clean food debris and wipe up any liquid that may have spilled on your counters.
2. Create a dish soap bubble bath.
If you have liquid dish soap in your kitchen, squeeze a bit into a bowl and fill with water until the bubbles are almost overflowing. Place the bowl where the fruit flies have been congregating and wait for them to dive into the bubble bath. The bubbles will weigh down their wings so they’ll be stuck in the bath and out of your hair!
3. Make a sweet trap.
Create a trap by using a glass jar and funnel. Place a small piece of fruit that’s attracting the flies into the jar and add a mixture of honey or sugar and vinegar. Then place the funnel (you can make your own funnel by using a paper towel or toilet paper roll) in the jar.
The fruit and sugar mixture will attract the fruit flies but the funnel should trap them in the jar.
Fruit flies buzzing around the kitchen sure do take the enjoyment out of eating fresh fruit so I hope you don’t have them anytime soon. If you do, though, these three tips should help quite well. Unfortunately, I have recent first hand experience!
