As we head into the weekend, you may be looking at a disastrous house and feeling overwhelmed. You don’t want to spend all weekend cleaning….but right now, that’s exactly what it looks like it will take to get things back in order.
Thankfully, it doesn’t have to be that way!
You just have to know where to start and how to get going. Here are 8 tips to motivate yourself to clean the house…quickly and efficiently!
8 Tips to Motivate Yourself to Clean the House
Before your get started…
1. Make a plan.
Do you need to clean every single room in the house? Or can you stick to the main living areas?
Before you get started, determine which rooms you want to tackle and in which order.
2. Gather the right tools.
The right cleaning products and tools can make or break your cleaning experience. If your bathroom, for example, will be your biggest challenge, find products that are specific to your specific needs. Try a new cleaning tool that you’ve been eying at the store. Buy a huge stack of microfiber and cleaning cloths.
The right cleaning products can cut your cleaning time in half so make sure you get good ones!
You don’t want to be running back and forth across the house because you don’t have the right cleaning product.
After you gather your cleaning tools and products, put them in a large container that you can tote around the house. The container can be something as simple as a 5-gallon bucket you pick up at the home improvement store or it can be a cute caddy. Just make sure it’s practical and can hold all of your materials.
3. Make a playlist.
Getting motivated to clean can be a lot like getting motivated to work out. Music helps! Listen to something upbeat and fun…it will help your cleaning day fly by.
4. Pick up before you clean.
Picking up isn’t the same as cleaning. Work room-by-room to quickly put items back where they belong. You might also find it handy to keep a basket close by for straggling items that belong in another room. When you move to other rooms, put items that you’ve accumulated in your basket where they belong.
When you’re ready to clean, you can hit those surface areas with ease!
When you start to clean…
5. Clean top to bottom and side to side.
In order to make the best use of your time, clean top to bottom and side to side. Clean everything in one spot and keep moving. You don’t move back and forth across one room or multiple rooms. Just clean everything in your path and work your way out the door.
6. Keep your tools with you.
As you work from room to room, take your bucket full of cleaning products and tools, broom, vacuum, duster, trash bags and anything else you might need with you. That way you won’t lose valuable time if you need to grab a specialty tool.
7. Use both hands.
Two hands are better than one right? You can spray with one hand and wipe with the other. Use a wet rag with one hand and dry with the other. Pick up stray toys with one hand while holding a box with the other. If you have two hands, move quicker by putting them both to work!
8. Stay Focused.
Focus can sometimes be the hard part. But do everything you can to stay at the task at hand. Get someone to watch your kids, crank up the tunes, try to beat the clock, and stay focused.
I know you can do it!
I sure do hope these tips will help you get motivated to clean. When you’re finished, kick up your feet, grab a cup of tea, and relax in your nice, clean home.
