31 Days to Make Cleaning a Habit – Habit 18

Never Leave a Room Without Taking Something With You

Over the last several months I’ve been trying to implement habit 18.  Almost every time I leave a room, I glance quickly to see if there’s something I can take to the room I’m about to enter.

I don’t always remember to do it. Sometimes I’m just forgetful…other times I’m “forgetful” on purpose!

But, every single time I pick something up and take it to the correct place, I’m extremely thankful that I did. It makes the room look incredibly better throughout the day. Plus, it makes the daily 5 Minute Pick Up a cinch!

Isn’t it funny how the small things often make the greatest impact?

Do you think you can begin implementing this habit? More importantly, do you think you can talk your family into it?!

Cleaning Products EVERYONE Should Own

I’ve tested quite a few cleaning products over the years. Things like vacuums, steam mops, scrub brushes, scrapers, all-purpose cleaners and many specialty cleaners for surfaces like wood, stainless, tile, mold, mildew, windows and more…just to name a few. Some cleaners have worked well so they’ve become a staple in my cleaning caddy; others were mediocre and […]

100+ items you can declutter and never miss

The average American household apparently has over 300,00 possessions. 300,000!!! There’s no way we love, use, and enjoy that many items. In fact, having all those items stored away, shoved in closets/drawers, or even strewn about actually hinders our life. When you get rid of the least valuable, it opens up space for the items you do use, […]

How to Build the Perfect Spring Wardrobe…with little to no money

I’m thoroughly convinced that one reason so many of us have a closet full of clothes we don’t love to wear, is that we shop aimlessly. We buy things JUST because they are on sale. Or JUST because an item is on the new trend list. The problem with that purposeless shopping is we don’t take […]

i’ve tried doing this over time to. Sometimes i do good at it sometimes not so well.. but it does help a lot. My husbands Nan has a theory of if you put it back where it belongs the instant you are done with it then you don’t have to pick it up later.

This is the theory that my daughter learns in Montessori, but for some reason it doesn’t come home with her 🙁 I’m definitely trying harder & harder to implement it at the house!

Something that helps me with this is to have a place in each room for things that need to go elsewhere. There is a spot at the top and bottom of the stairs for things that need to go up or down, so it’s easy to pick something up and bring it to the right room. This keeps it simple to pick up a room – anything that goes out, goes to the going out pile. Then everything else is in its place!

These are all good tips. I keep a spotless home by cleaning 30 minutes a day. I turn on my favorite tv music station in two rooms and just go at it. Also, I put things back as soon as I’m done with them. I am constantly throwing away trash as well.

It’s really pretty simple to keep my 2 level home clean even with 2 teens and a husband. They’ve been pretty trained (LOL), but I’ll pick up something that someone else overlooked or ignored. It’s all pretty quick.

A big clean for me is mopping (twice a week, but I wipe up spills as they happen if I see them), cleaning windows, and wiping everything down with a hot soapy towel. I do that about once a week. Still only takes about 30 minutes. I use a feather duster throughout the house every day or every other day. Eliminates the need to use furniture polish (though sometimes I use it anyway.) Some days I can spend 10 minutes cleaning and find myself looking around with nothing more to do.

Took me 35 years to realize that cleaning 10-30 minutes a day is stress free and much easier than cleaning for hours at a time.
